Chitosan researchers successful in youth research competition
© Peter Jorres Gymnasium, Ahrweiler
The two 14-year-old schoolgirls Joana S. and Lena A. from the Peter-Joerres-Gymnasium in Ahrweiler wanted to know everything in detail. For their work for "pupils experiment" they produced chitosan from gathered crabshells and fresh shrimp shells. For analyses our director of operations Torsten Richter supported the girls with words and deeds. Reference chitosan of the Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH made analyses work easier.
After the production of chitosan with the assignment of hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and acetic acid, they tested various properties of different samples, like for example fat binding properties, antimicorbial activity as well as its abilities as poly-cation. Furtheron they produced foils. That way they came to the conclusion that chitosan must be a panacea.
Not only the tou young scientists were sold on their project. With their effort they convinced the jury and won the first prize and a special prize of the regional competition in the department of chemistry. This way they qualified for the state competition. On this level they also carried away the judges and Joana and Lena stood up to the concurrence in Rhineland-Palatinate. This time they also left the venue of the industrial partner Boehringer Ingelheim with a first prize in the department of chemistry. The Technical University of Kaiserslautern awarded an exceptional prize for the most inventive work.
The Heppe Medical Chitosan staff congratulates Joana Sifft and Lena Alfter for their delightful success. We wish both young talents alot of fun doing new experiments.
